UPDATES ON THE PRESENCE OF THE UK VARIANT B.1.1.7 CASES IN CENTRAL VISAYAS
Press Release | February 7, 2021
DOH Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH CVCHD) would like to issue this statement clarifying the matter on the actual number of confirmed UK Variant B.1.1.7 cases, from Central Visayas, contrary to the press release issued on February 5, 2021.
Only one (1) case, the Returning Overseas Filipino (ROF) from Talisay City, Cebu is verified and validated. He arrived January 18, 2021, tested and quarantined pending the release of the PCR Test. When the result turned out to be positive, the said sample was sent to the Philippine Genomic Center (PGC) for genomic sequencing, and result released on February 5, 2021. Since the patient had a medical condition that required management and treatment in a hospital, he was admitted and discharged well and recovered on February 2, 2021.
The second mentioned case was that from Liloan, Cebu. Upon investigation, although the address is that of Liloan, Cebu he was only home August 2020 and returned to Manila November 17 of the same year, to process his requirements as an OFW, and has never traveled back to his hometown since then. He tested positive for SARS-COV2 in a private molecular laboratory in Sta. Ana, Manila as a requirement for his travel for work, on January 17, 2021, and sample was forwarded to the PGC for genomic sequencing for the UK Variant, which result was likewise released as positive on February 5, 2021.
A total of 10 samples from our ROFs and OFWs since the travel restrictions last December 2020 has been submitted to PGC. Of these samples, we have only one confirmed case for UK Variant.
Due to the noticeable increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the region, we have initiated the conduct of bio-surveillance not only for the UK Variant but for the probability of other variants that may be in circulation, that could partly account for the increased transmissibility. We have sent 70 samples collected from January 30 - February 2, 2021, from targeted populations and whose samples are compliant with the criteria set for genomic sequencing.
We reiterate our commitment for progressive proactive planning and delivery of services, and a timely release of advisories for guidance.
