Behind every success is a good RESEARCH!
As the emphasis on research in the field of health gains momentum, “1st DOH-RO7 RESEARCH CONGRESS” was realized. The event was the first collaborative research event of Department of Health – RO7 (DOH-RO7) and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) which took place at Grand Convention of Cebu, Cebu City on August 17, 2017 with the goals to strengthen the partnership and to promote the advocacy of the two with regard to health research development and innovation.
The congress endeavoured significantly to accelerate researchers to do research studies that were aligned with Philippine Health Agenda development priority areas and with the Regional Unified Health Research Agenda. It has been known that the region produced highly qualified health professionals. However, only few made it to showcase or publish their research study. These were common stories shared by stakeholders and linkages in every RUHRA activities. Anent thereto, DOH-RO7 and VSMMC purposely invited researchers in medical field to boost not only our regions health research awareness but the confidence level of the regions’ researchers as well.

DOH Director of the Office for Policy and Health Systems, Dr. Kenneth Ronquillo graced the event. A message was given by then DOH-RO7 Assistant Regional Director, Dr. Ruben S. Siapno. Plenary session came after with the topic “Developing Research Program for Women’s Health” and “Qualitative Research Program for Public Health Research” discussed by Dr. Juanito Zuasula, Dr. Helen Madamba and Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal. They stressed out the importance to take into consideration the needs of the people in underprivileged circumstances and enhance equity in access to health care which has been continuously reiterated in every health care event.

Department of Health Regional Office VII spearheads 2017 Newborn Screening Visayas Awarding Ceremony
The Department of Health Regional Office VII, in partnership with the Department of Health Offices and the Newborn Screening Center spearheaded the 2017 Newborn Screening Visayas Awarding Ceremony held in Grand Convention Center, Archbishop Reyes Avenue, Cebu City last 26 October 2017.
The awarding ceremony recognized the exemplary accomplishments, innovation and dedication of the Newborn Screening Facilities, individuals, organizations, government agencies and local government units in saving babies from mental retardation and death.

In attendance during the recognition ceremony were the OIC- Director of Newborn Screening Reference Center, Ma. Elouisa Reyes, Head of Family Health and Nutrition Cluster, Dr. Renilyn R. Reyes, OIC- Chief of Local Health Support Division, Dr. Guy Perez and the awardees from various localities of Visayas covering the Region 6 (Western Visayas), Region 7 (Central Visayas), Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), other agencies and stakeholders concerned in the implementation of newborn screening program.
Giving her key message, Dir. Reyes lauded the participants for their drive and dedication to the program to extend beyond their efforts to save more lives. She also recognized the need and setting-up of NBS Continuity Clinics in every region for referral and management of all screened-positive newborns.

Department of Health Regional Office VII leads DDAPTP Health Caravan
As the government’s endeavor step up to its campaign against illegal drugs , the Department of Health Regional Office VII in collaboration with the Municipality of San Remigio spearheaded a health caravan held last 02 June 2017 held at Mayor Artemio T. Masbate Sport Complex Gymnasium, San Remigio, Province of Cebu.
Through the Department of Health-Dangerous Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program (DDAPTP), the health caravan was convened to support the government's commitment in giving forefront health care services to the drug surrenderers. More than four hundred (400) have availed the health care services offered during the activity. Among these were glucose testing, blood pressure testing, dental services and free HIV testing and consultation.

Gracing the activity was Department of Health Undersecretary, Roger P. Tong-an, Assistant Regional Director, Dir. Ruben S. Siapno, Chief of Regulation and Licensing Support Division, Dr. Sophia M. Mancao, Mayor of Municipality of San Remigio, Honorable Mayor Martinez, DOH Regional Staff, Provincial Local Government Units, Non-Government Offices (NGOs) and other stakeholders.

Department of Health Regional Office VII held 3rd Newborn Screening Fun Run 2017
In celebration of the first week of October as “National Newborn Screening Awareness Week”, the Department of Health Regional Office VII organized the 3rd Newborn Screening Fun Run 2017 last 01 October 2017 held at DOH Regional Office, Osmeña, Boulevard, Cebu City.
The fun run kicked-off the said celebration which was participated in by the DOH Regional Office Officials and Staff, Provincial Health Offices, DOH Retained Hospitals, Local Health Officials and other government agencies. Highlighting the education and awareness efforts of DOH co-partners. The running track course is consisted of over a distance of 3k, 6k, 12k passing across the streets of Osmeña Boulevard to P. Del Rosario Street to Sikatuna Street and back.

The activity was convened primarily urged parents to get their newborn babies to undergo testing and to solicit active advocates in the promoting the significance of newborn screening.
Giving her keynote message, DOH Regional Office of Family Health Section, Medical Officer IV, Dr. Jeanette Pauline Arellano emphasized the importance of newborn testing and public awareness campaign of NBS. In addition, she mentioned that newborn screening helps to find babies who have certain serious medical conditions to begin with the treatment. “By starting treatment early, serious problems like illness, intellectual disabilities, or death can often be prevented.” Dr. Arellano urged.

To further strengthen the linkage between partners and other stakeholders for the intensive prevention of Kidney and other health related diseases, the Department of Health Regional Office VII took its lead on the conduct of the 1st Regional Summit for Renal Disease Control Program (ReDCoP) and Observance of National Kidney Month last 09 June 2017 at Crown Regency Suites Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
The activity was a partnership undertaking of the National Kidney Transplant Institution (NKTI), Regional Office, Provincial Health Office, Local Government Units and other participating partners and offices. The summit was also a widespread advocacy calling in observance of National Kidney Month with the theme “Wastong Pangangatawan, Sakit sa Bato Kayang Iwasan.”

Giving his keynote message, Regional Director Jaime S. Bernadas highlighted the importance of working in close partnership. Nonetheless, he also mentioned that he's looking forward to continued partnership among private partners and stakeholders.
“The Philippine Government through the Department of Health has continuously intensified its directions toward non-communicable diseases. Today, we commemorate our partnership which brings toward upfront of renal diseases and its impact on human lives to promote its awareness. Through forged partnership and concerted efforts among our partners, we now brought this to the national line.” Dir. Bernadas expressed.
