OFFICIAL STATEMENT NO. 32

THIRTY (30) NEW COVID-19 CASES IN CENTRAL VISAYAS, TOTAL CASES AT FIVE HUNDRED TWENTY-SEVEN (527). ONE (1) MORTALITY REPORTED, TOTAL DEATHS NOW AT ELEVEN (11)

27 APRIL 2020

The Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH CVCHD) through the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center Sub-National Laboratory (VSMMC SNL) has released, as of 5:00pm today, three hundred seventy-nine (379) test results. There are thirty-two (32) positive results, out of which are two (2) repeat tests of previously confirmed positive cases. This brings the total confirmed cases in the region to five hundred and twenty-seven (527). The number of deaths from those who are diagnosed to have COVID-19 increased to eleven (11) with the additional one (1) death recorded today.

There are twenty-five (25) additional cases from Cebu City bringing the total cases in the city to four hundred seventy-five (475). Lapu-Lapu City’s cases increased by four (4) which now has a total of thirty-two (32) while Mandaue City’s cases still remain at eleven (11). Among the provinces, Cebu Province has an additional case bringing the total cases in the province to four (4) There are still no new cases recorded in Bohol and Negros Oriental. Siquijor remains to have no documented case of COVID-19.

The new case in Cebu, who is also recorded as the additional death for today, is a seventeen-year (17) old male from a component city in the Province of Cebu. He had an existing medical condition that caused him to be especially vulnerable to infectious diseases such as COVID-19. We join his family in praying for his eternal repose and for his family’s strength in their bereavement.

The additional confirmed case and death has not changed the case fatality rate or the percentage of deaths among those who are infected with COVID-19 which remains at 2.0%. It still lower compared to the global average of 6.4%.

The regional numbers are increasing but this is a result of intensified active surveillance in the community conducted by our local health authorities. The increase in cases is expected as we continue to test more people; most especially when we will implement a targeted strategic testing in the communities in the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue. We remind the public that although we have a high number of cases, we also have a low number of deaths. The number of deaths is one of the measures of success in this fight against COVID-19. It means we are diagnosing them while they are still in the early stages of their infection and able to fight it with little to no medical attention and not when they are too sick which would need confinement in the hospital. The recoveries we witnessed have proven the competency and expertise of our health personnel attending to our COVID cases.

Let us continue to be vigilant through proper personal hygiene even as we continue our home isolation. Regular proper hand washing should continue to be done by everyone regardless of age. Let us isolate ourselves if we do not feel well and seek consultation at the soonest possible time at the nearest health facility.

Let us continue to do our part in this fight. We are all in these together.

God bless us all.

Erratum :

There is an adjustment with the total number of cases in Cebu City after we have determined that there is a double entry of a repeat case due to errors in the name of the confirmed case. For this reason, Cebu City’s case is adjusted to reflect four hundred and fifty (450) for 26 April 2020.
