28 APRIL 2020

The Department of Health Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH CVCHD) through the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center Sub-National Laboratory (VSMMC SNL) has released, as of 5:00 pm today, four hundred and fifty-one (451) test results. There are seventy-five (75) positive results, with two (2) of the results being repeat tests of previously confirmed positive cases. This brings the total confirmed cases in the region to six hundred (600). There was one (1) additional confirmed case who cleared the virus in his system. This brings the total number of laboratory negative to twenty-nine (29). The number of deaths from those who are diagnosed to have COVID-19 remains at eleven (11).

There are seventy-two (72) additional cases from Cebu City bringing the total cases in the city to five hundred and forty-seven (547). Lapu-Lapu City’s cases remain at thirty-two (32) and Mandaue City’s cases still remain at eleven (11). Among the provinces, Cebu Province has an additional case bringing the total cases in the province to five (5).  There are still no new cases recorded in Bohol and Negros Oriental. Siquijor remains to have no documented case of COVID-19.

The additional laboratory negative is a seventy-five (75) year old male who is already discharged from the hospital and has now completed his additional isolation. His recovery is welcome news to everyone in the region most specially to his family.

The additional confirmed cases have slightly decreased the case fatality rate or the percentage of deaths among those who are infected with COVID-19 at 1.8%. It still lower compared to the global average of 6.4%.

The slow increase in the number of recoveries from the recorded confirmed cases can be attributed to the gradual nature of the body to develop antibodies to fight off the infection and recover. On the other hand, the immediate nature of death makes it faster to record as compared to the slow and gradual battle against infection. Majority of the diagnosed COVID-19 cases in the region are not even admitted in the hospitals and do not need any medical intervention as they are presently asymptomatic.

We remind our fellow citizens that this is a fight we can win, but we can only win if like good soldiers we do what needs to be done. We should be united in our fight against COVID 19 and not against each other , most especially our health workers who continue to selflessly serve in our health facilities even with the risk of being exposed to our common enemy. We look forward to a tomorrow where we finally heal as one.

God bless us all
