Department of Health Regional Office VII relaunches Botika ng Bayan Program in Central Visayas

Ensuring universal access to medicines, the Department of Health in coordination with Department of Health Regional Office VII launched the Botika ng Bayan in Poblacion, Municipality of San Remigio, Cebu on 20 July 2018. This is a community-based health care program aims to provide access to free medicine to the marginalized sector of the Filipino population.

In attendance during the formal launching and ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) were DOH Assistant Secretary for Office of Health Regulation, Maria Francia Laxamana, , DOH Regional Office Director, Dir. Jaime Bernadas; Hon. Mariano Martinez, Mayor of Municipality of San Remigio; Dr. Melissa Guerrero, Head of Pharmaceutical Division; DOH Regional Chief of Local Health Support Division, Dr. Jonathan Neil Erasmo, invited representatives from Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, Food and Drug Administration and other stakeholders.

As per Department Memorandum 2018-0188, the Botika ng Bayan (BNB) Program is intended to better serve the underserved areas on provision of medicines access for free by the DOH to all identified Rural Health Units (RHUs) nationwide and bringing recipients to the barangay through regular community outreach activities and so improving the pharmacy services of the health facility.

In her keynote message, Asec. Maria Francia Laxamana underlined the DOH platform’s to universal access of medicines. “The DOH recognized the need of the poor and underserved communities facing significant challenges as to accessing health care services. Notably, access to free medicine has been identified hence Botika ng Bayan (BNB) Program is implemented.” Asec. Laxamana pronounced.

Cancer Awareness Walk

In line with the month-long observance in promoting cervical cancer awareness, prevention and control, the Department of Health Regional Office VII joined this year cervical cancer awareness walk dubbed as “Lantern Walk” at SM Seaside City, South Road Reclamation Area, Cebu City on 05 May 2018. The activity was spearheaded by Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) Cebu Chapter through its Chapter President, Dr. Helen Amorin.

Aside from Department of Health Regional Office VII, the walk was participated in by different partners from various partner agencies, hospital and educational institutions. This year’s theme for Cervical Cancer Consciousness Month was “Kalusugan ng Mag-ina ay Pahalagan: Magpa-cervical cancer screening at Magpabakuna laban sa HPV.”

Initiating the fight against cervical cancer, the program ceremony started with walk from San Pedro Calungsod Chapel to SM Seaside City. The event activity provided real time health information and education about cervical cancer and ways to prevent it.

In his keynote message, Department of Health Regional Office 7, Medical Officer IV, Dr. Dino Caing encouraged women to take the free cervical screening for the month of May. “Cervical cancer is still the second leading cause of deaths among women. It is still essential to recognize that the best medicine is prevention. We encourage everyone to be responsible of their own health especially women to take the free cervical screening in any DOH Hospitals or nearby health facilities,” Dr. Caing emphasized.

Department of Health Regional Office VII holds 2nd Regional Barangay Health Workers’ Congress

Realizing the contribution of Barangay Health Workers in the achievement of health care goals, the Department of Health Regional Office held the 2nd Regional Barangay Health Workers’ Congress in Bohol Tropics Resort, Graham Avenue, Tagbilaran City, Bohol on 12 to 13 April 2018.

Around 600 participants convened for the event with this year’s theme “Paghatag og Pasidungog sa mga Barangay Health Workers: Ang Lig-on nga kaabag sa pag-alagad sa katawhan ug katilingban.” The congress is held annually to recognize the BHWs’ contribution in promoting various health programs, projects and activities of DOH which are implemented by local government units (LGUs).

In attendance to the activity were Department of Health Regional Office, OIC-Director III, Dr. Sophia M. Mancao; Bohol Province Governor, Hon. Edgardo Chatto, Department of Health National Barangay Health Worker Program Manager, Ms. Teresa Santiago, Regional BHW President, Ms. Cresenciana P. Abucay and representatives of other participating regional offices. The congress was a venue for discussion and presentations of regional accomplishment and new updates of the DOH Programs.

Governor of Bohol Province, Honorable Edgardo Chatto, as the congress’ keynote speaker stressed in his speech the Barangay Health Workers' contribution to primary health care approach. “Our barangay health workers make a big difference in preventing diseases and reporting to health center when there is a need to respond. It is important to stress, that their role as BHWs connect bridges and link us to the community wherein frontline services must be present. They are the first hand health service provider in the grassroot level particularly among pregnant women and young children.” Governor Chatto stated.
